An Upstate Getaway
KINGSTON, N.Y. — A weekend in New York’s Hudson Valley is a bucolic, beautiful escape. An easy trip via train or car from New York City, the Hudson Valley has lots of cute towns with enough shopping, art galleries, and restaurants for a full weekend. You’ll see restaurant menus filled with ingredients from area farms; locally produced beer, wine, and cider; and specialty food shops.
We recently headed to Kingston, a beautiful town located on the Hudson River with a lot of history. It was New York's first capital city, and there are historic buildings to tour, like the Old Dutch Church — the congregation dates to the 17th century, with the current structure built in 1852 (George Clinton, vice president under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, is buried here). The town also has a lot of shopping, like at Rough Draft Bar & Books, which melds the two great pastimes of book shopping and having a drink.
Below, we’re sharing some picks for how to spend a day eating and drinking, and will be going to spots for pastries, pizza, salads, cocktails, wine, and more. If you want more Hudson Valley recommendations, we’ve also freshly revised our two-day Field Guide to Hudson Valley, which will provide you a full weekend (and then some!) of meals and drinks.
