Welcome to American Weekender!

We believe the best way to get to know a place is through its food. When you’re traveling, think of us as your expert advance team, pointing you to the best restaurants and bars around the country. When you’re home, look to us to provide inspiration for your next weekend away.

The American Weekender newsletter publishes each Friday. It features stories, profiles, and vetted recommendations from America’s smaller cities, college towns, and vacation destinations.

Our American Weekender Field Guides are authoritative, curated dining guides offering multi-day itineraries that highlight both new spots and local favorites. The digital guides are available for download on our website and are formatted for your mobile phone, perfect for quick reference on the go.

About the Authors

American Weekender is edited by Amy Cavanaugh and Kenney Marlatt, two Midwest-based journalists with decades of experience covering restaurants and bars from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Seaboard.

Amy is the dining editor at Chicago magazine and writes about food, drinks, and travel for publications such as Condé Nast Traveler, Food & Wine, Punch, and The Washington Post. She is originally from Massachusetts, went to graduate school in Maryland, and spent a few years in Washington, DC. Her favorite weekends are spent in Portland, Maine; Madison, Wisconsin; and Charleston, South Carolina.

Kenney is a lifelong journalist with a love of good food, cocktails, and road trips. His 25-year career in daily newspapers has taken him from South Carolina to Florida, Colorado to California, and most recently Indiana and Illinois. Kenney was born outside of Chicago in a suburb along Lake Michigan and grew up in the Virginia foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was first introduced to Wisconsin style Old Fashioneds in college and has been obsessed with cocktails ever since.
