Welcome to the weekend! Here’s what you’ll find in this week’s newsletter:

Weekend Getaway: Here’s a secret: The off season is absolutely the best time to go to Maine. We’re sharing some new picks from recent travels, including a Cambodian lunch stop, a coastal tropical bar, and a pizza spot that’s great for the entire family. Plus: We check into the new Longfellow Hotel in downtown Portland and share our Portland non-negotiables.

November’s Featured Field Guides: This month, we’re giving paid subscribers two freshly updated field guides! First, we’ve upgraded our Portland, Maine Field Guide. It’s now a five-day Signature Field Guide with more than 35 recommendations. Our four-day Southern Coast of Maine Field Guide has also been updated with some new favorites so you’re ready to make an off-season escape or get a jump on your 2025 vacation planning.

Weekend Reading: Great college towns near St. Louis, the evolution of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Biloxi-style pizza!

PORTLAND, MAINE — There are so many places I’d make a yearly visit if time and travel budget allowed, so I know how lucky it is that Maine is often on my docket. On each visit, I typically split my time between Portland and beachy points along the coast, and try to strike a balance between visiting favorite places and checking out what’s new. Recently, I ran around Portland for two days before heading down to York for the remainder of the week. Summer in Portland is very different from fall, when the chilly air gives the town a relaxed vibe (and there isn’t a wait at Eventide). If you’re looking for a quick fall getaway (or even a quiet winter escape), Maine is a great pick. Let’s go check in on some spots, from oysters at one of our must-visit places to fish and chips at a cute lil newcomer.
